Hope as an Anchor: How Faith in Jesus Keeps Us from Drifting
Life has a way of pulling us in unexpected directions. Even on calm days, unseen currents can slowly move us off course if we’re not firmly grounded. That’s why the image of hope as an anchor is so powerful—it reminds us that stability doesn’t come from perfect conditions, but from what holds us steady beneath the surface. In a world shaped by changing winds, rising waves, and constant pressure to drift, hope becomes more than a feeling; it becomes a necessity. Just like a boat on open water, our lives need something secure to keep us from wandering, something strong enough to hold us still and grounded when everything else is moving.

A Story About Anchors
Every summer my family loads up the minivan and heads across the country to Michigan for a week at a family camp located on a beautiful lake. Each year a family relative of ours rents a boat for us all to enjoy on the lake. At least once each trip, we take the boat out to a sand bar located in one part of the lake to let the kids swim. Without fail, we can never seem to locate the anchor on the boat. This inevitably leads to me being the anchor. I can remember standing waste deep in the middle of this lake, holding on to the back of the boat, to ensure that it does not drift. Believe it or not, I have learned to appreciate anchors because of this experience. Anchors are seriously under appreciated.

An Anchor’s Purpose
Anchors exist to prohibit drift. That is their sole purpose. Without them boats would wander and never stay in the same place. Boats are subject to wherever the wind and the waves want to take them, without an anchor. Even on a beautiful summer day in central Michigan, the boat will drift if left unattended. The small and seemingly insignificant anchor is a critical piece to a boats safety and security. This reality provides a powerful parallel in our own lives. Just as a boat is influenced by outside forces, so are we. If our lives are not anchored, if our lives are not grounded, we will drift.
Hope is the Anchor
In Hebrews chapter 6, the author mentions anchors. “We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf…” Hebrews 6:19-20a. Just as we are all in need of an anchor, we are also in need of hope. Hope is the ultimate encourager. The very thing that can motivate and keep one going. Believers in Jesus Christ have hope. Jesus Christ Himself is hope, the ultimate and eternal hope. The hope that we have through Jesus Christ will act as an anchor for us in this life. It is what anchors our souls. Anchors us in our core. Hope is a powerful thing and a sturdy anchor.
Hope Prevents Drift
Without an anchor a boat will drift. The result is the same in our own lives if we are anchor-less. The winds and waves of this world cause us to drift. Peer pressure, trends, societal norms, can push and pull us in different directions. If we aren’t anchored in the hope of Jesus Christ, the drift is inevitable. Hope in Jesus Christ anchors us and keeps us from drifting. As the winds come, as the pressure builds, hope in something higher, something eternal, something better anchors believers.
Hope Keeps us Afloat
It is no secret that life can get rough. The boat can will with water. The lake can get choppy. What happens when tragedy strikes? When the road gets difficult? When things feel confusing and nothing makes sense? Without an anchor in the midst of hardship, we could drown. Hope in Jesus Christ keeps us afloat. It is often the only thing that can keep us steady and moving forward. Paul writes of a promise in Romans 8. “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose” Romans 8:28. Promises like this provide the hope that anchors us in the midst of uncertainty and hardship. Hope keeps us floating.
Where is your Hope?
We all put our hope in something. Hope carries us. Where is your hope? Is it in a politician, or a sports team, or a friend or family member? None of those things are lasting. Anything of the world is temporary but hope in Jesus Christ is eternal. Paul writes in Romans 8 verse 24 that “hope that is seen is not hope.” If our hope is the seen and temporary things of this words, we will ultimately be disappointed and crushed. But if our hope is in Jesus Christ, we are anchored. If your hope is in Him, you have an everlasting anchor-point in this world. No matter what winds or waves come your way, you will be anchored. Put your faith and hope in Jesus. Give your life to Him. Then share the hope of Jesus with someone in your life today.
